Supporting the arts for over 50 years, the Michigan Music Association has been committed to providing music students in the State of Michigan an outlet for artistic talent, while helping them gain experience and confidence in developing their musical abilities. MMA provides performance opportunities through its music competitions which are held throughout Michigan.
Michigan Music Association was founded in 1967 as a non-profit, educational organization to perpetuate through high standards an annual competition for students in the state of Michigan. Its goals are to provide the public the opportunity to hear students in competition, to uphold a high standard in music education, provide a public outlet for the artistic talent of music students, and most importantly to help students gain the experience and confidence to develop their musical talents.
Past Presidents of MMA include: Al Dame, Terry Breese, Joyce Lucido, Nancy Lathem, Kevin Sayers, and Georgette Sarzyenski, Phil Pletcher, and Diane Mogan. MMA has come a long way since its inception. In the early years, competitions were held at local schools, Macomb Community College, and the Italian Cultural Center where you would find the board cooking “green” hot dogs and serving refreshments to the participants. More recently, our competitions have been held in Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo where there is no cooking done by board members. You will find restaurants readily available and a luncheon served before the awards ceremony. The future of MMA is also something to look forward to. The website with contest information, forms to download, standard lists displayed, scholarships, workshops…. is thriving!
Thanks to everyone supporting MMA and the arts.
